Most of the paints that I use are classic oils in caulking tube size. I buy once or twice a year, keeping an inventory and knowing how much I use of each color in relation to the others.
I used a warm/ cool palette for my basic colors.
- cad yellow lemon
- cad yellow light
- cad red light
- alizarine crimson
- ultramarine blue
- cerulean blue
In addition to these colors, I use dioxazene purple, sap green, permanent green light and cad orange.
On occassion, I add other colors depending on what I am painting. These are some of the colors I might add.
- violets
- permanent rose
- quinacridone red, coral
- mars orange
- yellow ochre
- cobalt blue
I use a variety of flat bristles and a few round brushes. I used to buy filberts, but the flats eventually turn into filberts.
I have a liner brush and a couple of soft nylon flat brushes. These brushes are soft brushes that I find are good for blocking in thin paint in the beginning of the painting.
I have three palette knives, all triangular shapes. One a very thin long one, which works well for lines, a large one for laying in paint and a small one for detail. I also have a couple of palette knives to mix paint.
I do not use any medium unless I find one of my paints is a little stiff. Then I will add a little liquin just to move the paint.
I use gamsol as a solvent and to clean my brushes.
I also use a gel, orange hand cleaner for cleaning my brushes after painting. I also take this with me while plein air painting to clean my hands and brushes.
My canvas and linen are usually a medium texture. I prefer using clausens linen, but still have some canvas around that I am using up.
For varnishing my paintings, I have been using matte and gloss finishes in Liquin Solvar mixing them together in equal parts.
