The desert is a mysterious, harsh environment with a tangled web of plants and animals, each having their own unique characteristics, woven together in a symbiotic relationship. Warm colors of the desert give the appearance of life having been spent, yet beneath the low, broken branches and thorns the desert continues, alive, thriving. As in a dream, the cholla comes to life with light glistening on new needles and a profusion of yellow summer flowers. The arms of the cactus drop to the desert floor where quickly reborn, create a forest of teddy bear cholla, a haven for desert creatures. While prickly and harsh, the cactus needles provide comfort to animals, providing shade during hot summer days, warmth on cold winter nights. The cactus wren and curve-billed thrashers build their nests in the arms of the cactus while pack rats fortify their nests amongst the dropped arms. Dropped segments of this mother cholla become passengers on passing animals traveling to a new destination, creating another forest of cholla for the desert creatures. And the dream continues in the dream, in the cycle of life.
