Sunset and Water Reflection – This Week’s Auction

sunset & water painting

I spent Sunday morning painting at the Royal Palms Resort here in Phoenix. They started a new program this year – I am the official Artist in Residence and will be painting at the Sunday Brunch every Sunday unless I’m out of town.

It wasn’t very busy this weekend with people gearing up for the Superbowl. But, I did finish this painting and started another. Next week should be very busy with Valentine’s Day.

I wish I had taken photos of when I started the painting. I always forget, then I’m into the painting. I usually .make up the sunsets, sometimes reminiscent of something I’ve seen. It starts with a simple line drawing, just getting the general design. I add and subtract, negative and positive painting, as I go. And, a lot of squinting!

Because it is a sunset, the ground is always dark and in shadows. It always starts with my leftover paints, making adjustments with the temperature and values. I usually add an element that adds a little light in the ground, rocks, wash, water or road. It adds a little spark and interest in all that dark.

It really comes down to color and values for me. I love the feel of the paint and color playing off one another. I’ll add and adjust the color as I go, one color on top of another. FUN!

To bid on this painting which starts at $200. and is worth $700, go HERE.

I’ll have a newsletter coming out this week with the a sale on sunset prints for the rest of Feb. (I’m sticking with the sky theme right now. It makes me think a little more.) If you haven’t signed up for my newsletter, do so by clicking HERE. You will get the code for the sale at 25% off and a sunset poster mailed to you

Have a great week and enjoy the sunset!
