the watermill

For centuries artists have drawn their inspiration from the Tuscan landscape and you could find few better places to enjoy your art and improve your skills than out beautiful historic watermill, set beside the curving banks of a river in a gentle, wooded valley.

“An enchanting place – I really loved it, endless delightful subjects to paint” “From the moment I stepped into my apartment and saw and heard the river, I realised it was going to be very special.”

“We’ve been on many painting holidays, but this the best ever.”

You will stay in stylish bedrooms in elegant buildings around the sunlit courtyard. You’ll take leisurely breakfasts and mouth-watering evening meals in our new courtyard dining room (and also dine out in area restaurants to sample traditional dishes and local wines). The mills garden, secluded millstream paths and riverside walks are all yours to enjoy.

Your Tutor: Becky Joy

Becky Joy, who lives and works in Arizona in the USA, is an artist, painter, teacher and an explorer! She says, “I’ve been known to take off on a minute’s notice for a painting trip. The exploration of a new place is as exciting to me as the process of painting. Plein air painting is that perfect combination.” Becky adds, “I paint what excites and inspires me, color combinations, lighting effects, and contrasts in elements, painting in rich luminous colors and expressive, painterly brushstrokes.”

An experienced and sympathetic teacher, Becky aims to help students strengthen their paintings and improve their understanding of the elements of  color, values, composition, and brushwork. She gives each person individual attention and will help them discover their own individual style. She says, “I am looking forward to exploring the glorious Tuscan scenery with my students and an inspiring week for all.

Workshop information

Becky says: “In my workshop you will be given the tools to create your own unique style through brushwork and colour. Your paintings will be filled with light when you discover how to make a painting glow. I will teach you technical information combined with your unique vision to give your paintings a personal connection, propelling your art in a new direction.”

“I will give a demo and help each artist individually. I teach sound fundamental concepts that are appropriate for any medium and skill level. Along with those concepts, I help each artist to take their paintings beyond the scene to create a mood, atmosphere and individuality in their paintings, finding their own voice. I am skilled in almost all mediums and am able to teach artists using mediums other than oil.”
